Agency

The claim

Life is not a fixed set of rails. It can be changed, molded, shaped — by you. And not just at big inflection points: agency is exercised at every second, in every micro-choice.

Two framings of agency in the corpus

External agency — changing the world. From 2025-07-04-poke-life (Jobs, endorsed):

Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Internal / continuous agency — shaping who you become through accumulating choices. From 2025-09-15-invisible-currency:

Every second of your life is a tradeoff... Who you become depends on which thread you reach for next.

Agency toward meaning. From 2025-06-20-purpose-vs-absurdity:

If nothing truly matters in some grand cosmic way, then maybe you get to choose what matters to you... building meaning one choice at a time.

Agency as effort under no guarantees. From 2026-06-14-cause-of-pain: keep striving at full intensity precisely because outcomes aren't owed — effort doesn't guarantee results, it only improves the odds.

Your effort buys you a better chance. Nothing more.

Opting out of effort to avoid pain isn't safety, it's loss of everything agency is for: "A life without effort is also a life without ambition. Without love. Without risk. Without achievement. Without meaning."

The live tension

Agency sits in live tension with the acceptance-of-ambiguity strand (letting go, accepting what you can't control). Are we agents who mold life, or people who must accept uncontrollable flux? Neither is fully embraced; neither fully denied. Tracked at agency-vs-acceptance.

2026-06-14-cause-of-pain proposes the clearest reconciliation so far — Maximum Effort + Minimum Entitlement (maximum-effort-minimum-entitlement): exercise full agency over the input (effort, process), full acceptance over the output (the outcome, which "reality owes you nothing"). Agency and acceptance stop competing once they're assigned to different domains.
