Rationality limits

The claim

Rationality isn't truth. It's a tool — powerful in its domain, but fundamentally local. Our confidence in it is the same kind of confidence past generations had in their frameworks, and that most of those frameworks turned out to be parochial.

Where it appears

Most directly in 2025-07-19-rationality-vs-delusion:

Rationality isn't the universal truth; it's just your current truth. It's a tiny window into an infinite cosmos... our modern rationality is just a slightly bigger flat-earth theory, boxing us into a minuscule sliver of what's truly out there.

Supporting cases the piece uses: relativity (time bends), quantum mechanics (superposition, entanglement), DMT experiences, confirmation bias, the Big Bang (something from nothing).

Also implicit in 2025-12-07-states-of-brain: the observer notices that any given neural state — including the rational one — is a state. Not the view from nowhere.

From 2026-04-18-nothing-matters: the creator-regress as a specific rationality-limit. The intuition everything needs a cause collapses when applied to itself:

If the creator always existed then why can't the atoms?

The point isn't that there's no God — it's that the rational move of appealing to first causes doesn't uniquely pick religion, or anything else. Causal reasoning loses traction at ultimate origins.

An important wrinkle (the method gap)

Zaid is usually a very rational writer. 2025-12-07-states-of-brain uses neuroscience rigorously. 2025-07-30-zoomin-or-zoomout uses math. 2025-09-15-invisible-currency uses structured argument. The Rationality vs Delusion piece is an outlier in his corpus — tonally and methodologically.

This doesn't invalidate the content, but it means the position should be read as rationality has a ceiling, not rationality is worthless. See rationality-used-vs-rejected.
